Sean Ogawa of Kula High School roared through the front nine of the Wailua Golf Course, setting a five-stroke lead over Kaua’i High School’s Kellen Watabu at the crossing enroute to squeaking to the KIF Boys Individual title by a stroke over Watabu, 148-147 following Saturday’s KIF round played at the Wailua Golf Course.
Ogawa finished the front nine of Wailua at 33 while Watabu chased five strokes back, two strokes less than team-mate Allan Baab who carded a 36 at the crossing.
Watabu regained himself at the back nine to outshoot Ogawa by a stroke, but the effort fell short as Watabu finished at 75, four strokes behind Ogawa.
Lehua Wise ended the day at 72, and combined with the 67 from last week’s match, soared to the KIF Girls Individual title at 139 with Jennie Pleas filling in at 152.
In addition to the Boys and Girls teams from Kaua’i High School who claimed the KIF team titles last week, Ogawa, Billy Toy, and Michael Garcia will be heading to the state tournament as individual qualifiers. The boys tournament will take place at the Waikoloa Kings course on the Big Island.
Kimberly Yama and Terra Bell will be the individual qualifiers for the girls that will join the Red Raider girls team at the state tournament scheduled for the Waikoloa Beach golf course.
