KAPA’A -The Kapa’a girls basketball team opened a 2-0 lead and never turned back in earning its first KIF win of the second round 38-31 over Kaua’i on Tuesday night at Kapa’a High School.
The Red Raiders made it close with several fourth quarter 3-pointers but the Warriors hit 7-of-9 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Tania Tasic scored a game-high 13 points for Kapa’a. However, the play of Sambdi Makepa was critical. Makepa was a factor on the inside and hit two late free throws to pave the Warriors’ win.
Makepa scored eight points including four from the free-throw stripe.
Holly Iloreta hit two-straight fourth period treys to bring the Red Raiders (0-2 in the KIF) within six points.
Iloreta scored eight for Kaua’i.
However, Kapa’a managed to hold on due in large part to the deft shooting from the free-throw line and suffocating defense.
Kelly Dennis hit two 3-pointers for six points while Farren Higley and Stephanie Kashiwabara added two field goals for the Red Raiders.
For the Warriors (1-1 in the KIF), Ihilani Yama totaled six points while teammate Danielle Hill added five points.
After leading 10-4 after one quarter, the Warriors outscored Kaua’i by a point in the second period to open an 18-11 lead.
Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter. Kaua’i and Kapa’a managed four points apiece in the eight minutes of action.
In the JV game, the Red Raiders opened a 13-3 lead in the first quarter en route to a 33-24 win over Kapa’a.
The Warriors made it close in the final moments but Kaua’i held on for the victory.
Darcie Allianic totaled six points for Kaua’i while Kennilyn Nakamura scored 13 for the Warriors.
