The lure of watching high school players in action, including all-state honorable mention Jordon Dizon, drew a sizable crowd to the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center where the County of Kaua’i’s Boys 16-under basketball season tipped off on Thursday night with two games.
Lance Kauwe’s trey, his only score in the game, late in the second period moved the Kaumakani Supersonics past a 12-12 stalemate as the Supersonics outgunned the Southside Boys 15-6 for a 19-14 halftime lead.
Another trey attempt at the buzzer by Kauwe came up empty following a missed layup on a clean steal by Jeremy Manuel as the South side Boys laid claim to a 45-42 win in an explosive 19-8 fourth quarter.
Josh Bradbury, J Paul Hornstine and Jeivin Mararagan combined for 14 points in that period.
Tab Matsumoto came up with a game-high 17 points including 4 buckets from three-pointland for theSouthside Boys with Hornstine finishing with nine points.
Dizon topped the Supersonics’ scoring with a dozen points followed by seven from Akeem Allen, and six by Andres Emayo.
Aaron hesapene fired a trey in his five-point showing with Lanikai Kanahele also adding five first-half markers.
North Shore 47, Five-O’s 39
AlbertAquino came up with two treys towards his game-total eight points in the third period as the North Shore ignited to a 26-13 second half enroute to their 47-39 win over the Five-O’s.
Kahua Hollinger topped the balanced North Shore scoring with nine points, including his three-for-seven from the free throw line in the final period.
Aquino and Mike Lindsey finished with eight markers each followed by five-point contributions from Alquin Jiminez and Zach Schwartz.
Kaupili Akau tallied a game-high 15 points in the Five-O’s loss.
The county’s Boys 16-under league plays each week onTuesday and Thursday through May 29 with the contest on Tuesday, April 22 feature Lihu’e and Kalaheo tipping off at 6 p.m. followed by the Kaumakani Supersonics tangling with the Lihu’e Five-O’s at 7 p.m.
