KAPA’A — With the score tied at 33 late in the fourth quarter, nothing was decided between the Kaua’i and Kapa’a girls basketball teams on Friday night.
Neither team mustered a lead over five points in the contest and both teams seemed to grab back momentum just when it appeared as if someone would take charge.
It was just a matter of one team making the necessary plays to pull away and win.
On this night that team was Kaua’i.
Holly Iloreta’s layup with under two minutes left put the Red Raiders up by two points and Kelly Dennis later added an inside score of her own in helping Kaua’i hold on for a 39-35 KIF win at Kapa’a High School.
After the Dennis layup, the Warriors (1-3 in the KIF) couldn’t get a score until Ihilani Yama’s basket with under a minute left brought Kapa’a close to Kaua’i.
However, the Red Raiders (2-2 in the KIF) didn’t allow the Warriors a score after Yama’s basket.
For the game, Yama led the Warriors with 12 points while teammate Tonia Tasic added seven points.
Tescily Maguire and Danielle Hill each chipped in with four points for Kapa’a.
The Red Raiders, which trailed early 10-8 after one quarter, received 10 points each from Iloreta and Dennis.
Delsa Tavana and Janee Correia poured in four points apiece for Kaua’i.
In the second quarter, the Red Raiders outscored Kapa’a 8-6 to pull to a 16-all tie at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Warriors scored 11 points to take a one-point lead heading to the final eight minutes of action.
In the JV contest, the Red Raiders outscored Kapa’a 25-4 in the second and third quarters to pull away and win 39-8 on Friday night.
Theresa Taylor and Cherisse Rapozo each totaled five points for the Red Raiders.
Diane Toy and Kristin Yanagawa scored two points each for Kapa’a.
