T’ai Chi Chuan practitioner Dr. Alton Kanter received a County of Kaua’i proclamation Thursday that was sponsored by Councilwoman JoAnn Yukimura.
Kanter, his wife Janey and others who practice the ancient Chinese exercise are set to take part in a global event on Saturday.
The event starts in Hong Kong at 10 a.m. local time, and travels with the sun through different time zones, all at 10 a.m.
The event on Kaua’i is to finish up the 24-hour cycle of the celebration.
It is scheduled for the Lihu’e Parish Hall at the Lihue United Church.
Some 70-80 countries involved in the program, Kanter said.

The event in Lihu’e will feature demonstrations of the Yang style short form, and a video of the late Grand Master Cheng Man-Ching, Kanter said.
Kanter teaches T’ai Chi Chuan at Lihue United Church, Parish Hall on Saturday mornings, and at the Na Kamalei School in Kilauea on Thursdays. Call 828-1139 for more information.
The school was formed in 1989 by Kanter and his wife. Kanter has been Involved in the world of T’ai Chi Chuan for 30 years, and he said his first teacher was T’ai Chi Chuan master Abraham Liu, who then taught classes in Los Angeles.
He said his mission now is to train teachers of T’ai Chi.
