KALAHEO – Basil Watson notched nine of the Lihu’e Breakaways’ eleven points in the sixth frame, including a badly-needed bucket from 3-pointland, but the effort fell short despite the Breakaways coming up with an 11-6 frame as the Lihu’e Sixers walked off the court with a 43-34 victory.
Stanley Furtado exploded for three field goals in the fourth stanza to expand the Sixers’ 20-15 halftime lead enroute to the Boys 14-Under victory Thursday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Jordan Cox and Treston Rego combined for 29 of the Sixers’ 43 points with Cox taking the lead with a game-high 15 points including three treys.
Rego, 2-for-9 at the charity stripe, fueled the Sixers’ first half 20-point drive with eight points, including his first stanza charity pair.
“They played good, tonight,” a satisfied coach Peter Rayno commented following their victory. “Now, we play Puhi (Lihu’e Hoops) next.”
That game will take place on Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting around 7:30 p.m.
Watson topped the Breakaways’ scoring with 15 points followed by Ira Nishi who finished the night with eight points, four coming in the sixth frame.
Rayno noted how his boys shut down the Breakaways’ Brendan Young, limiting the shooter to just two field goals all night.
Damien Girard also finished the night with a pair of field goals for the Breakaways, and despite Jonathan Gebauer’s impressive defensive showing, finished the night with just a digit.
Furtado finished the night with eight points for the Sixers with Baret Morishige adding four.
Travis Kawehe rounded out the Sixers’ scoring with a pair.
Waimea B&G emerged at the top of a slugfest with Kapa’a, 33-24, led by Calsen Agrade’s 10 points.
Chaz Galvez played well on both sides of the court for Kapa’a, ending the night with a game-high 11 points.
Brendan McDaniel lit up the boards for 16 points to lead the Westside Hornets to a 42-30 win over the Kalaheo Pistons in the nightcap as Josh Bradbury led the Pistons with 11 points.
Kimo Farias’ control on the court and 13 point offensive showing led the Westside Hornets to a 53-21 win over Kapa’a during Monday night’s action in Kalaheo.
Chaz Galvez topped the Kapa’a scoring with nine points.
Jordan Cox’s 15 points led the Sixers to a 49-34 win over Waimea B&G with Calsen Agrade leading the Westsiders with 10 points.
Lucky Andres tallied 13 points to lead the Lihu’e Hoops to a 3-point win over the Lihu’e Breakaways, 33-30.
Nathaniel Beralas topped the Breakaways’ scoring with nine points.
The final game of the Boys 14 Under season takes place on Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Waimea B&G will tangle with the Kalaheo Pistons in the opener with Kapa’a tipping off against the Lihu’e Breakaways about 6:30 p.m.
The highlight game will feature the Lihu’e Sixers matching up against the Lihu’e Hoops starting around 7:30 p.m.
