However in this game, on this night, they were huge.
Kapa’a led 27-22 heading into the final eight minutes of action.
The Warriors used their mini run to open a seemingly comfortable 11-point lead.
However, the Red Raiders rallied to close the gap to a single point with less than 30 seconds left.
After Nichol Kunioka-Volz hit one of two free throws with 22 seconds left for Kapa’a, the Red Raiders had one last chance to tie the score and send the game into a possible overtime.
However, Kaua’i’s furious comeback fell short as a Kelly Dennis 3-point bomb was long allowing the Warriors to gain their first conference win of the season 38-35 at the Kaua’i high gymnasium.
Sharlene Carillo scored a game-high 13 points for the Warriors (1-1 in the KIF) while teammate Danielle Hill hit several crucial jumpers (eight points) in the second half of action to help Kapa’a gain the victory.
Delsa Tavana scored a team-high eight points while Dennis added seven including a trey for the Red Raiders (0-2 in the KIF).
The Warriors took command of this game early, taking a 10-2 first quarter lead.
However, the Red Raiders fought back to cut the margin to 12-9 after one quarter.
In the second period, both teams played physically and looked to take control of the boards.
Kaua’i trailed at halftime 18-16.
In the third quarter, the Warriors played well on defense in holding the Red Raiders to six points.
However, Kaua’i was able to turn it around in the fourth quarter setting up the dramatic finish.
Tescily Maguire added four points for the Warriors while Kaua’i’s Amber Santos poured in four points.
In JV action, the Red Raiders took control from the onset in cruising to a 48-10 win over Kapa’a.
