An extraordinary effort on the part of three condominium owners at Kiahuna Plantation is breathing new life into the once-popular Kiahuna Swim & Tennis Club.
The tennis-playing partners who are part-time Kaua’i residents have authorized thousands of dollars in improvements to the facility across Po’ipu Road from the Kiahuna condominiums, near Po’ipu Shopping Village.
While some $600,000 in pool renovations take place, play on the 10 courts is limited to morning hours seven days a week, said Verlene Dawson, club manager.
The pool will have a slide, whirlpool bath and kiddy pool, and construction is expected to be finished by the end of April.
Once the pool is completed, the 10 courts open to the public, including eight of those which have recently been resurfaced, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
During the construction, the courts are open from 8 a.m. to noon. It is $5 to play all day for Kaua’i residents.
“We just want people to know that tennis is back at Kiahuna,” said Dawson, who has worked there for 10 years and wants to help restore the facility to the point where it may once again be considered for inclusion on the list of one of the top 50 tennis clubs in the world, as Kiahuna Swim & Tennis Club was once rated by Tennis magazine.
Continued expansion plans include construction, eventually, of a spa and fitness center, she said. Owners of Da’li Deli & Cafe in Koloa are planning to open a restaurant at the club as early as May, Dawson said.
