KILAUEA – Kaumakani Supersonic Aiko Grande lit up the scoreboards with five of her game-high nine points to lead the Supersonics to a 25-18 win over Wailua in the county’s Girls 12 Under basketball game played at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center on Wednesday night.
Grande sparked the Westside offensive with a pair of treys, the first shredding the twine in the second period, and the second coming in the critical sixth frame to ice the Kaumakani victory as the Supersonics exploded for 16 of their game-total 25 points in the second period.
Going to a 2-on-1 defense to contain Wailua’s Mai’likea Napolean, the Superrsonics held the Wailua center to six points, a pair coming in the second frame, and four slipping in in the fifth period.
Defensively, Wailua showed a lot of hustle sparked by guard Meagan Pablo, who came up empty on the scoreboards with a 0-2 showing from the free throw line, but was instrumental in pestering the Kaumakani girls throughout the night as well as slipping through the Kaumakani defense for a smart assist to Napolean in the second half.
The Wailua defense also kept Kaumakani’s tall person, Britnilyn Palacio to just a pair of second period points.
Guard Alicia Higa was the go-to guard/forward for Wailua and ended the night with three points balanced throughout the night.
Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade helped the Grande attack with six points on the night, four coming in their explosive second half, with Kori Sakamoto adding four in the win.
For Wailua, who continued with a double-header against hosting Kilauea in the tail end, Napoleon was assited with a 4-point showing from Emma Donigan followed by Higa.
