The Garden Island Racing Association begins its 2003 season Sunday with a full day of drag racing competition at Kauai Raceway Park in Mana. Mana is located near the county dump just north of Kekaha town.
Gates to the drag racing event open at 8 a.m., along with an inspection of the cars entered in the races. Racers sign up for the events the day at Kauai Raceway Park on the day of the race.
Racing usually begins between 9 and 10 a.m., and is often completed by nightfall. Night races are scheduled for later in the year.
Organizers run a variety of races, including stock classes, the most popular event. Many are street cars.
The GIRA owns the timing equipment used during the races.
The Mana track and the events are sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association.
The public is invited to attend the races. An admission fee is charged.
