Hawai’i guard Carl English has been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball player of the week for Feb. 17-23.
English, a junior from Patrick’s Cove, Newfoundland (Fatima Academy), averaged 24.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in a pair of wins over Nevada and Kent State last week.
Against the Wolf Pack, English scored 26 points in helping the Rainbow Warriors snap a three-game losing streak.
A few nights later he scored 22 points as Hawai’i defeated Kent State in one of ESPN’s Bracket Buster Saturday games.
He also shot 15 of 18 (.833) from the free throw line in the two games combined.
It was English’s third WAC player of the week, award this year and fourth of his career.
The other nominations were junior Aaron Haynes, Boise State; freshman guard Terry Pettis, Fresno State; senior forward Antonio Meeking, Louisiana Tech; senior guard Jerry Petty, Nevada; sophomore forward Michael Harris, Rice; sophomore forward Patrick Simpson, SMU; and senior guard Dante Swanson, Tulsa.
