WAIMEA – The KIF basketball champion Waimea High School Menehune (8-0) will take their first step on the quest for the Hawai’i High School state title by trying to tame the Leilehua Mules (11-2) on Wednesday starting at 2:15 p.m. at the Blaisdell Arena.
Top seed in the 2003 Hawaiian Airlines Boys State Basketball Championship Tournament are the Iolani Red Raiders, the ILH champions touting a perfect 14-0 record.
Second Seed are the Maui Sabers with a matching 14-0 record with Keaau of the Big Island named the third seed with a 13-0 season.
OIA Champion Kalaheo (11-3) rounds out the top four seeds in the championship tournament.
Should the Menehune suceed in taming the Central O’ahu Mules, they will advance to play the Maui Sabers on Thursday starting at 4 p.m.
An opening day loss will have the Menehune sit out Thursday’s action.
Other teams participating in the 2003 state championship tournament include Kaimuki (11-2), Mililani (9-5), Baldwin (10-4), St. Louis (1-3), Kamehameha (12-4), and Waiakea (9-4).
The Menehune’s games will be broadcast live on KQNG Am570 by Joel Pahukula.
