The Big Kahuna Steak, Sub & Gyros restaurant, along Kuhio Highway next to Taco Bell in Kapa’a, is open for business, marking a return to Kaua’i of the Greek specialty sandwich after a 10-year absence.
A gyro (pronounced yee-row) is a sandwich of spiced beef and lamb, slow-roasted on a vertical-spit broiler, sliced thin and served inside handmade, grilled pita bread.
The Original comes with onions, tomatoes, and a tangy Tzatziki sauce. The Maui Gourmet includes everything in the Original, plus cucumber, feta cheese and Greek olives.
The Kauai Cheese is served on a French baguette, and includes the two meats, grilled onions, tomatoes, a touch of Dijon mustard, Tzatziki sauce, and melted Monterey jack cheese.
Other popular dishes at the eatery include the Philadelphia (Philly) cheese steak sub, including steak, sauted onions, mushrooms and provolone cheese.
Served in the same style are chicken teriyaki and parmesan subs. A variety of cold subs, fresh salads, pizza and gourmet soups are also on the menus for lunch and dinner.
The Big Kahuna is also open for breakfast, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily. The menu features combo plates, omelets, buttermilk pancakes, fresh fruit, juices, and a grilled pita wrap.
The wrap is an omelet with choice of meats or vegetables, wrapped in a grilled pita with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.
The restaurant is open seven days a week, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. To avoid a potential wait, folks can call in orders in advance, 822-7553.
