Democratic state legislator Matt Matsunaga ran second to Case in Kaua’i County, winning 3,581 votes, or 37.4% of the vote.
The special election had a low turnout on Kaua’i with only 25.5% of registered voters going to the polls. On Saturday 6.045 votes were cast at various precincts on Kaua’i, and one at Ni’ihau School. Some 3,526 absentee ballots were cast prior to the special election day.
Republican state house member Barbara Marumoto won third place in the Kaua’i County results, with 406 votes cast for her.
Republican Nelson Secretario topped Kaua’i-based candidates running in the special election, taking seventh place on Kaua’i with 66 votes.
