LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) – A 47-year-old man and his teenage son drowned in waters off Kaua’i after apparently getting into trouble in choppy waters, authorities said.
The two had been swimming Saturday afternoon at Marine Camp Beach between Hanamaulu and Wailua in Nukolii on the island’s eastern shore.
Their identities were not immediately released.
“According to witnesses, one of the victims got in trouble in the water and the other one swam out to help him,” said Teddy Williams, acting battalion chief for the Kauai Fire Department.
Firefighters and rescue crews responded to the call about 1 p.m. and found the man and his 17-year-old son in the ocean, he said.
The father was pronounced dead at the scene. The son died either en route to Wilcox Hospital or shortly after arriving, authorities said.
