Cynthia Schur, President and Publisher of The Garden Island newspaper in Lihu’e has been promoted to President and Publisher of Pulitzer Central Coast Newspapers.
Cynthia’s leadership responsibilities includes two daily newspapers, The Santa Maria Times, Santa Maria California, The Lompoc Record, Lompoc, California and weekly publications The Times Press-Recorder and The Adobe Press located in San Luis Obispo, California.
Cynthia and her husband Barry moved to Kaua’i in 1987 at which time she became a sales representative and eventually sales manager of The Kauai Times, at the time a competitor of The Garden Island . Acquisitions by first Scripps League then Pulitzer Inc. resulted in the eventual merging of the two newspapers at which time she became Advertising Director of The Garden Island. Cynthia was promoted to President and Publisher of The Garden Island in 1998. During her tenure as Publisher, Cynthia oversaw the successful conversion of the 100- year-old publication from afternoon to morning distribution, developed a strong journalism team whose emphasis is community news and acquired the Kauai Business Report in 2002. Schur oversaw the redesign of The Garden Island, KauaiWorld.com Real Estate Guide, Kauai Beach Press and launched related online editions of these publications.
Cynthia was the 2001 Rotary Club of Kauai Employer of the Year and 2002 recipient of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s journalist of year for Kaua’i County. Cynthia , Barry and son Sam will reside in Santa Maria, California.
