PUHI — Island School’s Mario Rosa and Kapa’a’s Sharlene Carillo ran away with the KIF Cross Country Championship Saturday at the Kaua’i Community College course in Puhi.
Rosa finished the three mile race in 17 minutes, 51 seconds, edging close season-long rival Scott Matsumura, who finished in the time of 17.52.12. Two more Kauaians followed Matsumura — Chad Naganuma was third with an 18.16.25 and Ross Brandeburg took fourth with an 18.16.89.
Scott Martin (18.17.36) took fifth and Nathan Martin (18.34.23) was sixth.
Carillo, right before trudging to Kaua’i High School to play in the KIF Volleyball season finale, won the girl’s two-mile race in 12 minutes, 44 seconds. She was followed by Waimea’s Rachel Martin, who finished in 12.58.94. Kaua’i took the next three spots — Shauna Tachibana was third with a 13.41.48; Perry Madison was fourth with a 13.44.29; and Kassy Morishige took fifth with a 13.46.16.
Kapa’a’s Liana Nakazawa (14.04.53) was sixth and her teammate Kindra Stofleth (14.08.40) was seventh.
Overall, the Kaua’i Red Raiders won the girls KIF Cross Country meet with a score of 33 (score tallied by placing); Kapa’a was second with 36; Waimea was third with 60 and Island School was fourth with 125.
For the boys, Kaua’i took first with 26; Waimea was second with 45; Kapa’a was third with 90 and Island School was fourth with 95.
