Leo McCarthy (right) and Jodie Nomi (left) represented Kaua’i at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships on October 19, 2002, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. More than 50,000 triathletes from more than 50 countries annually attempt to qualify for the world’s most famous endurance event, which is limited to 1,500 contestants. The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run, which must be completed within the allotted 17-hour time frame. McCarthy completed the Ironman course in 11 hours and 3 seconds, while Nomi completed the Ironman course in 12 hours, 29 minutes and 32 seconds. Photo contributed.
