Lana’i – In the 18th century, in honor of their Gods and as a test of courage, Hawaiian warriors dove from the cliffs into the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean.
On August 31, the world’s best cliff divers will continue the tradition with respect to the Hawaiian culture by proving their athleticism and bravery atop the sacred 82-foot cliff face of Kaunolu to compete in the third annual Red Bull Cliff Diving Lana’i Hawaii event.
Credited as the birthplace of cliff diving, it’s no secret why Lana’i was chosen as the ideal location for this event where the legendary steep cliffs continue to beckon the courageous. Known as one of Hawaii’s most secluded island treasures, Lana’i preserves the spirit of the islands.
“Many of the divers are returning to Kaunolu for the second or third time to compete in this world renown event,” said event producer, Paul Ehman of Ehman Productions. “As always, exceptional care will be taken when dealing with the holy sites, temples and other culturally significant spots.”
Only the top modern-day divers from around the world qualify for the Red Bull Cliff Diving event on Lana’i after a grueling summer schedule of events in Europe including the Red Bull On The Rocks Tour, The World Cup events, and the Mediterranean Cup.
In addition to the top divers who will be pre-seeded into the finals on August 31st, eight additional divers will be invited to compete for the final two spots in a jam session on August 30th.
Divers will compete for the event title and opportunity to win a piece of a $35,000 prize purse.
