POIPU – A fundraising rodeo was held on Sunday at the CJM Stables in Poipu.
The event featured the most spectator-exciting events and was held to help six high school rodeo qualifiers earn funds to compete in Colorado.
The rodeo was held in conjunction with a fundraising kickoff by Councilman Daryl Kaneshiro, who did an exhibition bull ride along with Carl Dusenberry and Sonny Waialeale.
Brudda Kelekoma won the Bull riding event with 62 points.
The double mugging event, a uniquely Kaua’i event featuring a header and a mugger was taken by the team of Kevin Fernandez and Ryan Waalani, sponsored by Waalani Enterprises, who whipped their steer in a blistering 27.62 seconds.
Second place in that event went to the team of Sam Brun and Ricky Waalani sponsored by Inter-Island Helicopters who finished their task in 28.38 seconds.
Third place honors went to the Kaua’i Lagoons team of John Ludington and Ken Yamamoto, who tripped the clock at 30 seconds.
Breakaway roping honors were taken by the second rider out, Tami Yamamoto, who stopped the clock at 5.29 seconds with Roseanne Shimogawa atop a bob-tailed Pinto challenging at 5.65 seconds.
Third place in that event was nailed down by Corinna Vasconcelles at 7.48 seconds.
