Democratic gubernatorial candidates Ed Case and Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono are planning to speak at a fundraising lu’au being held in support of Councilman Gary Hooser.
The lu’au is set for Saturday and marks the beginning of Hooser’s Democratic primary election campaign.
Hooser is opposing state Sen. Jonathan Chun in the Democratic primary for the new Kaua’i-only senate seat. Chun served as a co-majority leader in the Senate during the 2002 session of the Legislature.
Chun’s seat currently extends from Kapa’a to Waimea and includes Ni’ihau. With the end of “canoe” districts in the Legislature, North Kaua’i will become part of an inclusive Kaua’i senate district. Maui-based Sen. Avery Chumbley currently represents North Kaua’i and East Maui.
