A shark nipped a surfer’s board Tuesday afternoon at ‘Anini Point, according to a report from the Kaua’i Police Department. The surfer arrived onshore uninjured. The attack was reported at about 1:30 Tuesday afternoon to the KPD’s Hanalei Police Substation.

The unnamed surfer said the shark looked to be about eight or nine feet long but he couldn’t tell what type it was, according to police. Judging from bite marks on his board, the shark didn’t get more than a taste of fiberglass and wax.

An unconfirmed report from Ha’ena reported a close encounter with a large shark by a surfer riding a wave at Tunnels off Ha’ena Point last week. The large shark reportedly flew past the surfer without making contact.
The attack at ‘Anini comes about ten weeks after high school student Hokuanu Aki lost his lower left leg to a shark while bodysurfing at Brennecke’s Beach on the South Shore.
