In an attempt to reduce the number of cracked windshields and other vehicular damage from flying rocks and other debris, the Kauai Police Department is strictly enforcing the county’s mud-guard ordinance.
The law provides for fines of $57 to $82 for those cited for operating vehicles in violation of the mud-guard ordinance.
Police have especially been on the lookout for pickup trucks with wide tires that extend beyond wheel wells or fenders, as these types of vehicles have no mechanism to prevent rocks and other debris from being kicked up by the tires.
The KPD has vowed to “cite on sight” offenders of the county law, which states, “No person shall operate on any highway any motor vehicle, trailer or semi-trailer unless equipped with fenders, covers or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle.”
Increases in numbers of reports of windshields and hoods damaged by flying rocks and other debris have prompted police to adopt this strict-enforcement stance, police said.
