KAPA’A – Entertainer Bette Midler is looking to place about 100 acres of her land on Kaua’i into the federal Wetlands Reserve Program for the benefit of endangered waterbirds.
“She’s signed up for a perpetual easement,” said Sharon Reilly of the conservation group Ducks Unlimited. “The intent of the program is to restore wetlands that were manipulated, drained, pumped or whatever, and to enhance them for waterfoul.”
The Honolulu Advertiser reported Sunday that Midler declined to comment on the refuge, saying through a spokesperson that she would issue a statement when her plans are further along.
The property is part of 1,400 acres of mostly sugarcane land Midler bought in 1999. The land was originally swamp, but it was drained and used to grow sugar.
Midler would retain ownership of the 100 acres, but would give up the right to put it to other uses.
