Alicia Michioka, 23, of Kaua’i was crowned Miss Hawaii USA Sunday at the Sheraton Waikiki before an audience of more than 1,000. Also announced was Miss Hawaii Teen USA Erin Madden, 17, a Punahou senior.
Both young women will serve as Hawai’i’s delegates to the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants, part of the Miss Universe organization.
Just days before the pageant, Michioka graduated with honors from Hawaii Pacific University with bachelor’s degrees in both advertising and journalism, along with a minor in theater. Her parents are Lorri Stilwell-Makaneole and Blaine Michioka, both of Kaua’i.
Michioka, who plans to head her own news publication one day, had another recent honor: making it to the semi-final rounds of auditions for the TV show, Survivor 5.
“I am so glad they didn’t pick me,” she said. “I really didn’t want to eat those bugs.”
Miss Hawaii Teen first runner-up was Karlee Martin, of Kaua’i, in another beauty pageant held over the weekend.
Michioka plans to travel to Gary, Ind. in February for the Miss America USA event. If she wins there she will go to the Miss Universe Contest. She is a former Miss Garden Isle, winning the title in 1996, and is the first Kaua’i girl to win the Miss Hawaii USA crown.
