Kaua’i’s sports arenas will echo with the sound of youngsters enjoying the thrill of competition as the West Kaua’i Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Kaua’i Youth Basketball Association, will host what they hope will become an annual event starting Friday evening at the Kaua’i High School Gym.
The boys 10 & Under program will be hosting three Leeward O’ahu teams for a series of games that will kick off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night and continue all day Saturday with the final tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
Police Activities League (PAL) Field Director Al Chock and Sgt. David Chong will be bringing over the Puuloa Bandits, the Village Park Extreme, and the Waikele Wildcats to take on Kaua’i teams, including Eleele, coached by Darian Cristobal, the Kaumakani Supersonics, coached by Fran Constantino, the Lihu’e And 1, coached by Fred Sasan, the Lihu’e Comets, and the Lihu’e Team X, both teams being coached by Billy Ramos.
Meanwhile, up at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, that arena will echo with action from the Boys 16 & Under teams as they take the floor for the County of Kaua’i 16-U Boys Goodwill Basketball Tournament starting Friday evening at 5:30, and continuing until the championship game tips off at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Kurt Inaba, the coach for the visiting Hilo (Piopio Bears) club is no stranger to Kaua’i competition and is one of the off-island teams matching mettle against Kaua’i’s program.
Kenneth Tangjin will be coaching a visiting O’ahu team.
Kaua’i teams involved in this weekend’s action includes Kalaheo, coached by Steven Matsumoto, Kaumakani, coached by Rudy Acoba, and Hanapepe under the coaching of Francis Kaohi.
In addition to basketball, the Hilo (Piopio Bears) are being accompanied by a contingent of volleyball players who will see action in both the Waimea and Kaumakani gyms against Kaua’i opponents. That segment of the weekend is being coordinated by Hoikaika’s Doc Arrington.
