Last November 15 students at Island School in Lihu’e had an opportunity to communicate by Amateur Radio with astronaut Commander Frank Culbertson while he was orbiting above Kaua’i in the International Space Station. With the space station up 250 miles traveling over 17,500 miles per hour they only had about eight minutes to ask questions and hear Commander Culbertson’s responses. Every student was able to speak personally with the astronaut.
Culbertson is now scheduled to be on Kaua’i for a presentation at Island School on Wednesday morning. Culbertson will speak about NASA and show videos of his explorations of space.
His last mission started on the Space Shuttle STS-105 Discovery, which docked with the International Space Station on August 12, 2001. Culbertson lived and worked on ISS for a total of 129 days, and was in command of the station for 117 days.
After his talk, 20 students will be able to ask specific questions about outer space.
