Mahealani Kekahu Sylva, president of the Koani Foundation, is scheduled to speak at a forum in New York City that gives Native Hawaiians and indigenous people of America a voice within the United Nations.
The UN’s Permanent Forum on indigenous issues is scheduled to be held through May 24 at the UN complex.
“For Native Hawaiians, it will address both the unique problems we have as well as the unique contributions we make to the human rights dialogue,” Sylva said. “Unification of our people is key to letting the truth and light of Hawaiians shine. It”s time to bring the whole world together behind a free Hawai’i.”
The agenda for the event will include a general debate as well as a review of the activities of the United Nations system relating to indigenous people.
The foundation, an Anahola-based Native Hawaiian rights organization, was founded by the late Butch Kekahu, a Hawaiian sovereignty advocate from Anahola who fought for the reinstatement of the Hawaiian monarchy.
