Wallace Rezentes Sr., the administrative assistant to Mayor Maryanne Kusaka, might remain in government after the mayor leaves office this year.
Rezentes recently took out papers to run for a Kaua’i County Council seat in this election year, but hasn’t decided whether he will actually run.
Rezentes said he took out a “job application” and will see whether he can get his family “to go forward with this interest that I have.” He said he would consult his family this weekend before making a decision.
Rezentes, a certified public accountant, was a finance director for Kaua’i County in the 1970s. His son, Wallace Rezentes Jr., currently holds that post.
Because Kusaka can’t run for re-election due to a two-term limit, Rezentes Sr. isn’t likely to continue in his current position. However, Rezentes might be hired again to fill that post under a new mayor.
Only Randal Valenciano, a six-term member of the Kaua’i County Council, has officially taken out papers to run for mayor.
Council Chair Ron Kouchi and Councilman Bryan Baptiste, both incumbents, have announced their intentions to officially run for mayor, but haven’t filed papers as of last Thursday.
Also taking out papers, but not filing are government watchdog Ray Chuan, who heads the North Shore-based Limu Coalition, which helped to remove motorized tour boats from Hanalei Bay, and Dennis Nimkie of Lihu’e, a community leader, and Lloyd Jeffrey Mallan, a Kapa’a businessman.
