Mildred Yamaguchi’s career in the United States Postal Service started over 30 years ago when she was a postal clerk at the ‘Ele’ele Post Office, and she’s been Kalaheo’s postmaster since 1986.
Yesterday at lunch, among a small group of staff and postal patrons, Yamaguchi quietly celebrated her retirement from the post office world for good with food and desserts that her staff said she made last night after her celebration dinner.
“Just work hard every day,” she said, walking into the room full of mail crates and boxes. Yamaguchi started at the Ele’ele post office in 1970. After nine years, she took the job of postmaster in Hanapepe, where she continued until 1986.
After 16 years at Kalaheo, Yamaguchi said she’s looking forward to retirement. “I’m going to babysit my granddaughter…and go to Las Vegas,” Yamaguchi said.
