LIHUE – Waimea High School graduate Travis Fernandez will be on hand Friday afternoon to witness the blessing and dedication of a new high jump pit at Vidinha Stadium.
The improved high jump area was made possible through a gift from the “Make A Wish Foundation,” at the request of Fernandez, more than a year ago.
The ceremony will take place on Friday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m., prior to the start of the KIF track meet.
Travis excelled at football, basketball and track at Waimea High School, while battling life-threatening lymphoma. He received chemotherapy treatments and a bone marrow transplant during his high school years, and graduated in June 2000.
In October 2000, the “Make A Wish Foundation” granted Travis’ wish of making a contribution toward improving the County of Kauai’s track facilities. A $10,000 donation was received, and was put toward construction of a new jumping surface and landing pit at Vidinha stadium. The total cost of the project, completed in the fall of 2001, was $35,000.
Currently, Travis is living on Oahu and attending Kapiolani Community College. He will be on hand for the Friday ceremonies, along with Mayor Kusaka, his former track coach, David Walker, and representatives from the Department of Education, and the “Make a Wish Foundation.”
