A 21-year-old Kaua’i woman remained in critical condition yesterday afternoon at The Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu.
She was the driver of a vehicle involved in a one-car mishap along Kuhio Highway near Wailua Golf Course early Saturday morning.
The passenger in the vehicle, another young Kaua’i woman, remained in stable condition yesterday at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. According to police, alcohol and speed may be factors involved in the early-morning spinout that led to the vehicle slamming into a utility pole.
As of Tuesday morning, one of the victims of the Sunday afternoon Koke’e Road head-on collision remained in stable condition at Wilcox Hospital. Another victim from that incident was treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Over at the West Kauai Medical Center, formerly Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, another of the victims of the Koke’e Road crash, a Kaua’i resident, remained at the hospital in fair condition yesterday.
According to police information and eyewitness accounts, two vehicles apparently racing down Koke’e Road early Sunday afternoon came around a blind turn near the 13-mile marker, and one of the cars crossed the center line and hit a rental car head-on. The rental car was heading up the road toward the lodge and state park areas.
Police continue to investigate both incidents.
