Speed and alcohol may be factors, according to police, in a one-car crash that has two Kaua’i women in separate hospitals on different islands three days after the wreck.
A 21-year-old woman remained in critical condition at The Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu yesterday, after being assessed at the scene of the accident as having sustained possible head and internal injuries.
She was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to Wilcox Hospital, then by AMR vehicle to Lihue Airport, and flown via Hawaii Air Ambulance to Honolulu, and transported to Queen’s by AMR, following the 2:20 a.m. accident Saturday along Kuhio Highway near the Wailua Golf Course.
The driver has been in critical condition since she arrived at Queen’s early Saturday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The passenger, who according to police may have sustained neck and internal injuries, was in stable condition yesterday at Wilcox Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
According to police, the vehicle was heading northbound on wet Kuhio Highway in a light rain, when it spun and struck a utility pole.
