A field trip to O’ahu by members of the Island School third grade got a major $2,500 boost when 14 members of the class took first place in the HMSA 5-A-Day Song Contest at the Ala Moana Shopping Center on Saturday.
The anticipated field trip which will take place in April was the impetus that got the students excited about entering the song competition that required the creation of not only lyrics and music, but had to involve five major characters including Rocco Brocco-Lee, Paula Papaya, Jammin’ Joe Pineapple, Moshi Moshi Mushroom, and Anna Banana.
Under the leadership of teacher Lynda Liesse and choreographer Shelby Dabin, the class enrolled the help of music teacher Mary Alfiler to compose the eventual winning piece.
Leaving on the first flight Saturday morning, the mission of the team dressed in yellow-and-blue tie-dyed tee shirts and yellow caps was obvious. One of the parents who accompanied the group to O’ahu noted that some people in the nine other semi-finalist groups did not think the small group from Kaua’i was any threat, but when the students chirped their first notes, those opinions quickly faded.
embers of the winning team include Sophia Yee, Cassie Winston, Brennan Wortmann, Dallas Correa, Kaylen Blaine, Megan Chock, Chelsea Chock, Hartley Dabin, Kendra Rask, Michaela Sullivan, J Raley Louis, Alex Russell, Logan Domingo, and Caycie Pascual.
In addition to HMSA, other sponsors in the song competition included Jamba Juice, Meadow Gold Dairies, and Hawaiian Airlines.
