Kaua’i paddlers are bringing home the gold at the International Va’a Federation World Sprints in French Polynesia.
Laola Lake is bringing back a gold medal from the event which is being held in Bora Bora this year. Lake is the only Kaua’i member of the Team O’ahu women’s crew. The team won a gold medal in the 1,000 meters race for women 45 years old and up. They also won a silver medal in the same division for a 500-meter race.
The Goodale family received a call from Bora Bora from David “Kawika” Goodale with word that his senior master 50 and up team had won the gold medal in a race in their division. Paddlers on the team with Kaua’i connections include Gaylord Wilcox. A full report on the win will appear in a future edition of The Garden Island.
The competition draws paddlers from across the world to compete in dozens of races. The event is divided into junior, master and senior master divisions.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the International Va’a Federation World Sprint Championships. The island of Bora Bora in French Polynesia is hosting the championships. Racing began on Saturday, March 9 and ended Friday.
