Barretto resurfaced in 2000, after recovering from a lengthy illness, and ran a strong ninth in that year’s council race, (seven are seated) garnering 7,483 votes.
Barretto, a retired businessman who handled junked cars for the county, trailed Billy Swain (who finished eighth) by 1600 votes.
Barretto was 1887 votes behind current council member Daryl Kaneshiro, who earned the seventh and last seat on the 2000 council.
Barretto is a longtime friend and ally of current council member Kaipo Asing.
