The second meet of the 2002 inaugural KIF paddling league pounded the Nawiliwili Harbor Saturday as Kapa’a continued its streak with wins in all varsity races and six more points on the standing board.
Kaua’i notched two points which boosted their total to seven, and Waimea got its first point of the season.
Kapa’a’s girls turned on the (body) motor to send its canoe sailing through the finish line four seconds ahead of Waimea in the first of three scored varsity races.
The Warriors finished the half-mile-long race in the time of 4:43.92; the Menehunes finished with a 4:57.50; the Red Raiders notched a 5:10.66
Kapa’a’s boys just touched out pursuing Kaua’i to get the checkered flag and their second win of the day.
Although the Red Raiders chipped into the lead up through the final 10 yards, the Warriors were able to maintain long and hard-fought strokes to ultimately win the race in its finale.
The Warriors finished with a 3:48.81; the Red Raiders had a 3:48.96, and the Menehunes notched a 4:11.98.
The east-siders were also victorious in the varsity mixed race – a tight race until Kapa’a stroked the distance in the end. The Red Raiders finished six seconds behind.
The KIF Championship race will take place next Saturday, March 2nd.
