Resting Wednesday morning on a trailer that was looking way more forlorn than the boat itself, the yacht Kaien was out of the water and off the sand in Hanamaulu for a move onto another trailer for a short trip to Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor.
The boat was beached since last month on Hanamaulu Beach. Its owner estimated the boat will need about a month’s worth of repairs before it is seaworthy.
The yacht, out of Port Townsend, Wash., anchored in Hanama’ulu Bay last month because there was no room at Nawiliwili, the owner said.
A fierce winter storm pulled the 35-foot boat loose from its anchorage, depositing it finally in less than a foot of water near the beach.
Subsequent storms, strong wind and shallow water hampered efforts to float the boat back out to sea. Finally a crane lifted the boat onto a trailer, which was able – just barely – to move the craft off the beach. The trailer’s wheels sagged from the weight of the boat.
