Daryl Kaneshiro on Wednesday became the first Kaua’i County Council incumbent to pick up nomination papers for a re-election bid this fall.
Kaneshiro is in his second two-year term.
At least three incumbents are giving up their council seats to run for other offices — Ron Kouchi and Bryan Baptiste for mayor, and Gary Hooser for the state Senate. Councilman Randal Valenciano is deciding whether to run for re-election or for mayor.
New candidates for the council are stepping forward. Earlier this week, Ray Paler became the first official candidate by filing his nomination papers and the 15 signatures required. George Menor did the same yesterday.
July 23 is the filing deadline for county candidates. The primary election is slated for Sept. 21.
