A 46-year-old visitor from Kansas was rescued by county firefighters after he fell and apparently broke his left ankle on the Hanakapiai Trail yesterday afternoon.
A hiking companion with the man, whose identity was not released, hiked out of the trail and called authorities for help after 1 p.m.
Two firefighters from Hanalei hiked in and assisted hikers who had helped to carry the man, who had hiked 1 1/2 mile into the trail when he slipped, said Fire Department Capt. Colin Wilson.
Wilson and two other search and rescue personnel from the Lihu’e Fire Station hiked into the trail, placed the stricken man in a basket and carried him out.
The man was driven by ambulance to Wilcox Hospital for additional treatment for non-life threatening injuries, according to Fire Department acting battalion chief Charles Hiramoto.
