Some of the finished product of the Rice Street reconstruction will start appearing next week.
The Lihue street has been torn up for widening and other improvements since last fall, but part of it will be paved beginning Tuesday in front of the Punua Insurance office and continuing toward Kuhio Highway. Curbs and other preliminary work is already done along the part that will be paved.
During the paving work, Eiwa and Umi streets will be accessible only from Hardy Street, and motorists driving to Kuhio will be detoured via Haleko Street, a Kauai County spokeswoman said. Traffic coming from Kuhio and Kaumualii highways will be allowed to use a single lane on Rice that will be open. Flaggers will direct the traffic.
After Tuesday’s paving, general contractor Goodfellow Brothers will start preparing the rest of Rice for more paving heading toward Kapule Highway. The preparations will take about two weeks, according to the county.
On Monday and Tuesday, traffic will be detoured from Rice between Hoolako Street and Kapule during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Business access will be allowed, however.
Traffic coming from Nawiliwili will be directed onto Kapule and can reach Rice via the industrial park that ends at Hoolako. Traffic coming from Kalena Street will be detoured through Lihue Town Estates, officials said.
