Every year, the community is asked to make donations to the
Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund. With the help of community
agencies, Zonta members identify families that won’t have a merry
Christmas without help. Every day from now until Christmas, The
Garden Island will publish stories about these people. The names have
been changed to protect their privacy, but the stories are all actual
case histories of people living on Kaua’i.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas
Fund, c/o The Garden Island, P.O. Box 231, Lihu’e, HI 96766.

Dede is turning her life around
Dede is 48 years old. She’s in treatment for substance abuse and has
done remarkably well in her recovery.
She has gotten into permanent housing, has done volunteer work and
has a part-time job. And she has enrolled in some training classes to
prepare for full-time employment.
She gets some financial assistance but not enough. One of Dede’s
goals in life is to be self-supporting. She is very grateful for all
the help and support she has gotten and is appreciative of any help
offered or given to her, and would like some new clothes for
job-searching and for future employment. She also needs some
household items, linen and kitchen utensils.
Single mother has dreams for kids
Nancy, 34, is a single mother with four children – David, 14, Sherry,
10, Robin, 8, and Barbara, who is four months old. The father of the
three oldest children is in prison on the mainland, and he was
incarcerated for seven of the 14 years they were together. The father
of her youngest child left without telling her where he was going.
Barbara was a twin; the other was stillborn.
Nancy is going to school five days a week as a prerequisite for a
nursing program. She is trying to budget and has been able to keep
her bills current. but has a hard time saving any money because of
her income. She would love for the children to have bikes and some
new clothes.
