Mike Ashman arrived on Kauai in 1940, hired by The Garden Island’s editor/publisher Charlie Fern as a radio announcer for KTOH. The commercial radio station was a first for the Island. Ashman left Kauai went home for Christmas in 1941 prior to Pearl Harbor, and returned in 1948 to become manager of KTOH and served through 1952. His recollections of life on Kauai in the era from 1940 through the early 1950s is slated for publication by the Kaua’i Historical Society.
