The Garden Island and the Zonta Club of Kaua’i are again teaming up with the community to make the holidays a little happier for those in need through donations to the Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members identify families who won’t have a merry Christmas without help. Every day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about people who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to protect their privacy, but the stories are all actual case histories of people living on Kaua’i.
Money collected will be used to fulfill their wishes whenever possible. Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund, c/o The Garden Island, P.O. Box 231, Lihue, HI 96766. Donations may also be dropped off at the newspaper’s office at 3137 Kuhio Hwy. in Lihu’e during office hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Because of storage limitations, people are asked to refrain from bringing in used goods. Monetary donations are preferred.
Gift certificate would make Margaret happy
Margaret Johnson is a 79-year-old woman who lives alone and has a very limited income.
She is very lonely and often depressed due to lack of family interaction and support.
Each month Margaret spends about 90 percent of her income on needed medications and rent, leaving her with very little to buy food or other home necessities.
A gift certificate for groceries or household items would make her happy for the holidays.
Jane could use groceries and household necessities
Every day is a challenge for 66-year-old Jane Wood, who lives alone and on oxygen 24 hours a day. Because of her health problems, Jane is homebound and has little or no opportunity to socialize with other people. She also has very little contact with her family.
Jane tries to manage her monthly expenses on an extremely low income. Some help with buying groceries or household necessities this holiday season would brighten her day.
