The New York City Police say thank you, Kilauea preschoolers.
Students in the preschool program at Kilauea Elementary School created a book in appreciation of the rescue efforts of police and others and sent it to them following the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks in the city.
On Friday, the preschoolers heard back from the police, including Lt. Michael Pappas, head of a unit that’s involved in search efforts at the destroyed World Trade Center.
“You took the time to make a beautiful smiling face and thanked us. That makes all of us smile. When you are working in conditions such as these, that truly means a lot,” Pappas wrote in a letter on Police Department stationery.
Other students and classes at Kilauea also sent letters of best wishes and thanks to the NYC rescue workers, but only the preschoolers got a reply, for which Pappas apologized.
“I know there are probably other students in other grades in your school who wrote, and I wish we could answer them all, but we still have a lot of work to do,” he wrote.
According to Pappas, piles of cards and letters sent by students all over the country are often placed at the relief work site.
