Gabriel accused of harassing co-worker
Suspended Kaua’i County Police officer Nelson Gabriel is facing new criminal charges relating to his alleged sexual misconduct.
Gabriel, who is awaiting a Circuit Court verdict on felony child abuse charges that could put him in jail for life if he’s ruled guilty, has now been accused in six counts of harassment, all petty misdemeanors, and one charge of harassment by stalking, a misdemeanor.
According to authorities, the latest charges, filed late last week by the county prosecuting attorney’s office, stem from accusations made by a female co-worker at the county’s 9-1-1 emergency communications center, where Gabriel was reassigned after child abuse charges were leveled against him two years ago.
Gabriel’s two-day trial on more than 15 counts of sexual assault against a minor (his step-daughter) concluded two weeks ago. He waived a jury trial and was tried by the court. Judge George Masuoka has promised a ruling by the end of this month.
Gabriel will appear in District Court on the new charges, also before the end of the month, authorities said. He remains free on his own recognizance.
Police chief George Freitas is on paid leave while an investigation is underway of a complaint from two high-ranking officers who allege Freitas interfered in the second investigation against Gabriel.
