Concrete was poured recently at Po’ipu Beach Park for a $70,000 playground structure hoped to be ready for child’s play by Friday, Nov. 9.
The foundation was laid and, after three weeks of curing, playground equipment will be bolted into the concrete, over which a two-inch layer of rubberized surfacing will be laid.
Equipment will go up in a two-pod system, with hardly any movable parts.
One section is designed for children ages two to five, the other for children six to 12.
Because it is so close to the beach, it had to be designed to be highly resistant to salt spray, wear and corrosion.
Donating foundation expertise and finishing work was Unlimited Construction of Lihu’e.
Other donors to the project include the County of Kaua’i, Crawford Idema Foundation, Nancy and Tom Crawford, Lawa’i Beach Resort, Marriott Waiohai Beach Club, Kiahuna Plantation Resort, Kiahuna Plantation Homeowners Association, Castle Resorts & Hotels guests, Atherton Foundation, Sheraton Kaua’i Resort, Alexander & Baldwin Foundation, Kaua’i Vacation Rentals, Po’ipu Shopping Village and Aston at Po’ipu Kai.
The project was organized by the Po’ipu Beach Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit entity.
Pacific Recreation of O’ahu is supplying the state-of-the-art playground equipment. A blessing is expected next month.
