Developers and supporters of the Port Allen Marina Center gathered Friday for a groundbreaking and blessing of the $4.5 million project that will be a new anchor for the local maritime community.
About 200 people attended the ceremony at the 1.7-acre site at the corner of Waialo and Small Boat Harbor roads where the new building will be completed by next June.
A&B Properties, a subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin Inc., is the project developer. The center will cover 32,000 square feet and offer space for tour boat operators, boat chandlery supplies and retail stores.
The center “will enhance the area and attract more residents and visitors” to Port Allen, said Mamo Cummings, president of the Kaua’i Chamber of Commerce.
“This is a great location,” Cummings added.
A&B Properties already has two warehouses in the area. Another warehouse and a restaurant near Port Allen Harbor are in A&B’s long-range plans development plans.
