The Kapa’a Warriors stormed back from their two-game slump showing off a new style of defense that stifled the Kaua’i Red Raiders, 13-9, 8-11.
In a virtual see-saw battle where multiple side-outs shrunk the scoreboard, Kapa’a came out strong from the beginning, jumping out to an 8-5 lead in the first.
What was common for the Warriors was to break down. They were supposed to let the Red Raiders catch-up after the initial lead and then be taken over at the end.
But they wouldn’t have it. Not this time.
The Warriors pulled out to a 7-4 lead in the second and never looked back.
Kapa’a exhibited the same fire-power with Austin “Maka” Alapai (6 kills) leading his army, but added extra artillery with key kills by Vincent Dora, Ricky Rodrick and Ben Kuhaulua.
Coach Manny Henriques positioned his team to a 5-1 offense, sending Garrett Danner to the primary setter position. This, Coach Henriques said, provided consistency in the team’s formerly ailing setting strategy.
In the end, it came down to two main factors: a strong revised defense and team communication.
“Credit to Coach Gary McGuire, who worked hard on our defense this last week so we could improve our game down the stretch,” said Coach Henriques said of the much needed Warrior win. “This just proves how balanced this league is. The scores are always close to the end.”
