Expect traffic delays
Niu Construction Inc., low bidder on two separate state contracts worth a total of $2.5 million to repave essentially the entire length of Nawiliwili Road, is in high gear on both projects.
Crews have moved nearer the Kukui Grove Center end of the road at its intersection with Kaumuali’i Highway after nearly finishing work on the more difficult portion of the road near Rice Street and Kapule Highway.
Bobby Keao, a Niu official, said traffic delays are still inevitable along Nawiliwili Road. He said if motorists can avoid the construction zone, they should.
Earlier, Keao said Niu would do try to keep traffic flowing in each direction during the resurfacing work. Flaggers have been directing traffic on the heavily traveled road this week.
The current work, under a $1.3 million contract, is to resurface Nawiliwili Road from Kaumuali’i Highway to Wa’apa Road near Nawilwili Harbor.
The second contract, worth $1.2 million and which is nearly finished, is to resurface the rest of Nawiliwili Road, from Wa’apa Road through the area where Nawilwili Road turns into Rice Street and all the way to the intersection of Kapule Highway.
Keao said the timing on the two separate contracts was swapped, so that the work between Kapule and Wa’apa was done first.
The projects include reconstructing weakened pavement, building sidewalks, curbs and curb ramps, replacing guardrails, pavement markings and traffic signs, and drainage improvements.
